Movies in theaters are thriving, and not even Netflix can resist
Welcome back to the zoetrope, where the wheel keeps turning in the world of moving images. Today in Projections we’re talking about Greta Gerwig’s Narnia adaptation moving to 2027 and what it means for Netflix’s commitment to putting movies in theaters … some Academy Awards rule changes … my beloved Anne Hathaway and her one-of-a-kind career… a little gem you should check out … and, of course, Physical Media Corner.
But first, thank you to GQ and writer Frazier Tharpe for talking with me about this newsletter, my history in music journalism and why I’m washed now, my experience with Steven Spielberg earlier this year, and more. I was an editor and writer at GQ between 2009 and 2012, so this was an honor to be featured. You can read the whole interview here.
OK, on to the movies.
Netflix’s Theatrical Window Has Opened. Quick, Everyone Jump Through It.
Last Friday afternoon, from a news dump grew a beautiful rose. After a production delay, Netflix announced that Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew would move off of its Thanksgiving release date to February 12, 2027. And, more importantly, the streaming service confirmed the movie would receive Netflix’s first-ever first-run theatrical release with a 45-day window. I cannot overstate the importance of this for movie fans.
